The Queso Connection
A historic diner, a comeback story and queso? Now that's a combination worth chasing. Strange Bird occupies a restored streamliner diner on Barnard Street in Savannah's Victorian District. The concept began as a food truck in a 1967 Airstream before opening its permanent restaurant in 2023. After a fire forced the restaurant to close in February 2025, Strange Bird made its return in March 2026. The Mexican-inspired menu features smoked meats, creative tacos, burritos and queso served with salsa macha and chiles toreados. This stop comes recommended by a fellow queso enthusiast who specifically called out the chorizo fundido, a dish we'll be asking about when we visit. A little restaurant with a remarkable story, and another reminder that following the cheese can lead to unexpected places.
