Classic / Yellow Queso / Nashville / Vanderbilt / Icon / Nashville Institution
San Antonio Taco Co.
SATCO’s yellow queso is part of Nashville history, served beside Vanderbilt under the glow of “HOME IS WHERE THE QUESO IS.”
The Queso Connection
Some queso belongs to a restaurant. This queso belongs to a piece of Nashville. SATCO has been tucked beside Vanderbilt since 1984, with its sprawling patio backing up to a part of town I knew well during my own Nashville years. I came here for the same kind of gloriously unfussy order again and again: queso, a cheese enchilada and a tamale. And then there’s the sign, a neon beacon along 21st Avenue **HOME IS WHERE THE QUESO IS.** For a person who has spent a lot of her life trying to figure out exactly where home is, that one hits differently now. After more than four decades, SATCO changed ownership in 2026. Nashville collectively held its breath over the things you don't mess with when you inherit an institution. The new owners answered at least one of those questions quickly: The queso stays. Good. Some recipes aren't merely menu items. They're landmarks.

The queso briefing
Queso
This isn't a queso you analyze. It's a queso you remember. SATCO's thin, old-school chili con queso has been riding shotgun through Nashville lives since the '80s: college afternoons, cheap dinners, patio beers, first dates, old friends and entire eras of 21st Avenue that aren't there anymore. Nashville has changed around it. The queso hasn't needed to.
