White Cheese Dip / Ark-Mex / Arkansas Royalty / Iconic
Loca Luna
Loca Luna’s white cheese dip reaches back to 1988 and carries one of Arkansas’s boldest historical claims about the category.
The Queso Connection
Here comes another branch of the Arkansas cheese-dip family tree. Loca Luna's version reaches back to 1988, when chefs Mark Abernathy and Frank McGehee co-created the dip. An older menu went considerably further and called it “The First White Cheese Dip in America.” That's the restaurant's historical claim, not one we're going to referee from the Trail wagon, but it absolutely earns a marker on the map
WHAT TO ORDER
The queso briefing
White Cheese Dip
Loca Luna's white cheese dip doesn't whisper. It's thick, pale and built with enough chile heat to leave a little spark behind each chip. Reviewers have been talking about this bowl for years, repeatedly calling it a Loca Luna signature and noting the kick beneath all that cheese. One diner described the experience perfectly without meaning to: they weren't convinced by the first bite, then kept dipping faster until they were scraping the bottom of the bowl. That's a pretty good field test for cheese dip.
“Sometimes you don't just follow the cheese-dip history. You get to sit down and eat with it.”
