Gabriela’s Latin Fusion
Plantain chips and queso make this downtown Athens stop a delicious reminder that the dipping vessel matters too.
The Queso Connection
Plantains plus queso widen the mission parameters in the best way. What happens when cheese meets a hearty match in a vessel that's something besides tortilla chips? At Gabriela's Latin Fusion in downtown Athens, the clear win is the plantain chips. They're the kind of curveball that makes a food trail better, because the point was never to police melted cheese. The point was to follow it. Gabriela's itself is built around that same willingness to cross borders on a menu, bringing Latin American, juices, coffee, desserts, and South American flavors together with the foods its Athens community loves.
WHAT TO ORDER
The queso briefing
Plantains chips and cheese dip!
Gabriela's swaps the expected tortilla chip for plantain chips served with cheese dip, a small menu move that delightfully widens the Queso Trail mission parameters. The restaurant itself describes the dish as part of the “Latin side” of its fusion menu, alongside empanadas, street corn and Latin burritos. Ryan agrees -- plantains are a super "new"to me dipping vessel for queso -- so good!
“A Beyond the Chip field note. Plantains take over queso-delivery duty, bringing their own sweetness, starch and crunch. Gabriela's Latin Fusion is our first Trail marker for this particular pairing.”
